Generic Skills
Generic skills include skills that are expected in every workforce. The skills include a positive attitude towards stakeholders as well as upholding company policy. My degree has allowed me to gain Microsoft office knowledge as well as increase my technological skills. It has also allowed me to interact with people better and understand how to speak to individuals from different communities thanks to my working with communities unit.
Specialised Skills
During my prisons and punishment unit, we started to understand risk assessment, how it works and where we apply it. The assessment will allow me as a police officer, or correctives worker, to understand an inmate’s probability of reoffending or rehabilitating during their parole hearing. I have also learnt about AVOs (Apprehended violence orders) and how we can monitor those people with AVOs against them to prevent any harm they have towards individuals.
Community funding application development
Needs analysis is important and essential in understanding what needs to be done to achieve certain outcomes. As a criminology student, it is vital to continuously conduct needs analysis, especially in units such as Working with Communities and Contemporary social issues and professional practice. Through group assignments and work, such as retail and charity organisations, I have understood how to quickly evaluate needs through the situation and an understanding of communities I am a part of. Through needs analysis, it tends to become easier to understand projects required to help improve the issues identified in public. Through identification, I then research and create a proposal to bring forth to essential government and community departments. These departments help us with funding projects that allow our increased research and community improvement. Through my first community grant presentation, I have understood that it is important to first analyse the statistics from communities, such as school levels and their link to unemployment rates. I have also learnt to consider costs and the high estimate of costs the better, this is in case of any unfortunate unforeseen circumstances. In summary, this unit and group assessment has helped me understand the necessities for community funding applications.
Applied debating: Developing Position Papers
Through my final assignment, the position paper, I have understood how essential it is to research about a topic. There are many different viewpoints about one specific topic and articles that can hinder your opinion. The paper I did was based on sex work and as I went through the research, it became harder to focus on my side that sex work should be kept legalised. Applied debates challenge the reader and persuade them to keep an open mind when forming their own opinion. It was difficult to not sound as thought I was attacking the opposing argument. Through this paper, I have formed many new ideas about various topics.
